Big Mix Festival to shake up Cairngorms with cocktail of food and drink

Take a measure of gin, add in a splash of Scotch whisky, top up with craft beer, add some food and serve with a garnish of music, art and crafts – it’s the perfect recipe for a brand new event, The Aviemore Big Mix Festival.

The three-day festival will take place from September 20 to 22 to showcase the region’s finest food and drink producers, venues, arts and crafts.

“We have some of the very best award-winning food and drink producers in Scotland right on our doorstep, along with a thriving and skilled arts and crafts community. Bringing them together for The Aviemore Big Mix Festival seemed a natural thing to do,” said Patricia Dillon, managing director of Speyside Distillery.

“The Cairngorms provide a stunning backdrop and in Aviemore we have an accessible, welcoming and friendly location which is geared up to accommodate both day trippers and visitors looking to make a weekend of it.

“We also hope that local people will come along and use it as an opportunity to socialise with family and friends, while also getting to know more about the producers in the community and see first-hand what they do.”

During the Aviemore Big Mix Festival there will be a series of events at various venues over three days, with the main event staged in the centre of Aviemore on the village green.

Speyside Distillery and The Snug are the lead sponsors for the event, and other key partners include The Scottish Gin Society, Kinrara Gin; Cairngorm Brewery; Inshriach Gin; La Taverna; The Highland Line; Daffy’s Gin; Kilted Fudge Company; Route 7 Cafe; Café Mambo; ProFish; Mieles Gelateria; Cairngorm Hotel; Loch Insh Centre; Macdonald Aviemore and Woodsign.

Visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to sample food and drink and meet with the producers and crafters who are based in the area. A live music programme will also be staged over the course of the weekend.

“We opened our own visitor experience, The Snug, in Aviemore almost a year ago and we have been overwhelmed at the interest there has been from both the local community and visitors,” said John McDonough, CEO of Speyside Distillery and a director of Cairngorm Business Partnership.

“People are incredibly interested in food and drink, but more than that, they want to learn the story behind the brand and meet the people who are involved in the production.

“The partners already involved with Aviemore Big Mix Festival are very passionate about the event and how it could grow in the future. This year’s event will be a ‘taster’ session for us all, and we aim to build Aviemore Big Mix Festival into something that could be a spectacular event for the region.”
